ben hulse design

about

Born in North Yorkshire, England, Ben moved with his family to Western Canada as a child in 1986. At age 9, Ben attended the Calgary '88 Winter Olympic Games where things like Torch Relays and British ski jumpers captured his imagination. Shortly after, he discovered two things which would change his path: design and music. By his late teens he was creating album covers, music videos, apparel, and touring the country in a band supporting national acts.

While in university, Hulse's work appeared on billboards, in national magazines, on television and radio around the world. In 2005, he graduated from Simon Fraser University with a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Interactive Arts, majoring in Interaction Design. Here he examined interdisciplinary design and methodologies which translate across numerous design fields from branding to industrial design to architecture. In 2007, after several more Canadian tours, Ben joined the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games design team — which is responsible for some of the most iconic elements of the Games.

Working under the late design director Leo Obstbaum, Hulse designed the Vancouver 2010 Torch Relay identity, the official posters, and was part of the Look of the Games design team. He also contributed to the design and art direction of the torches, community cauldrons, sport pictograms, Vancouver 2010 Terry Fox Award, and literally hundreds of other Olympic and Paralympic projects. Now design manager, Ben is working on the Official Commemorative Book of the Vancouver 2010 Games due out May 2010.

Aside from design, Ben has been in the music industry for over a decade as a touring and recording artist, photographer, and artist manager. Hulse is currently writing and performing with Run The Red Light.
